Should Oprah Invite Chris Brown On Her Show?
A Few Words................
Unless you live under a rock, you are well aware of the horrific incident that happened on the eve of the 2009 Grammy Awards, which left singer Rihanna beaten and battered....all done at the hands of her then boyfriend, singer/actor Chris Brown who was 19 at the time. The media firestorm that erupted was fast & furious. Our hearts went out to Rihanna and we all hoped and prayed she was okay. We later felt her pain and humuliation when her privacy was betrayed and a photo of her taken after the fight was released world wide! Through the media blitz, early reconcilation & breakup of a young relationship, Rihanna has been strong & resilient through the tough times. Rihanna recently sat down for the first time and gave a in depth interview with Diane Sawyer. She also has a highly anticipated new CD coming out in November titled "Rated R". Chris Brown has taken full responsibility for his disturbing actions that night. Chris was sentenced to 5 years probation, 6 months hard labor, a year of counseling, and ordered to stay away from Rihanna. No communication whatsoever! Now at age 20, Chris Brown is also attempting to move forward in positive way to rebuilding what was once a very promising music and film career. Chris has given interviews to Larry King and most recently MTV. He has apologized to Rihanna personally, publically, and continuously. I truly believe he is indeed sorry for what he did and I know he can be rehabilitated not to do harm to anyone again. Despite Chris Brown's attempts to move on with his life, there have been of course people who are very vocal about the fact that Chris Brown should be in jail or given a harsher sentence. The public will always have opinions about any subject, however due to recent events I felt the need to start this blog: CBrownOnO.BlogSpot.Com!
Media Queen Being Mean?
I must first start off by saying that I am a fan of both Rihanna and Chris Brown. Both are talented entertainers. I also admire media mogul Oprah Winfrey, who I believe usually is fair in her assessments of various situations. Not only do I admire Oprah Winfrey, I respect her as well. However, I have to say I was very disappointed in actions Oprah Winfrey took in the handling of the Rihanna/Chris Brown story. Just a few weeks after the horrible incident, Oprah held a show dedicated to the "Rihanna's of the world". The show focused on speaking to the youth about possible domestic violence going on in their relationships. Personally I think the show topic was a great one and something that needed to be addressed. The problem comes in when Oprah, who has the "VOICE" that reaches many, stated the show was for the "Rihanna's of the world" and basically relayed the message pubically that "love doesn't hurt" and "Rihanna should not go back to Chris".... I could not believe my ears. Completely inappropriate. Oprah should have left Rihanna and Chris Brown's name out of the subject of the show. The public message should have been made in a private phone call. When Oprah Speaks, millions listen, and it didn't leave much room for forgiveness in the future for Chris if he proved he could be a better man. Those sentiments seemed to ring true, when rumblings started that Oprah did not want Chris Brown on her show. Again I was dumbstruck! How could Oprah ban Chris Brown from her show? Didn't she air a show in which she used his name and situation throughout the conversation? Why wouldn't you then do a FOLLOW UP show with the person whom you were speaking about? Why not allow Chris Brown on to the show so he could speak and help young men understand that in a blink of an eye, in the heat of anger you can make a very serious mistake, one that could do severe harm to the person you are with.. and in his experience, tell them how to stop, think and walk away from the situation before it escalates!! That would be the logical thing to do. However to ban this young man, who YES did a HORRIBLE AND UNTHINKABLE crime at the age of 19...and has taken responsibility for his actions and is trying to move on with his life in a positive manner... to ban this person, who had previously been a guest on the show and was described as a nice guy, who had performed for Oprah's school in Africa, and all.... to ban this young man who is trying to pick up the pieces of his life and move forward. It's her right of course..but it is also hypocritical because Oprah has had guests on her show previously who had domestic violence issues in their past...grown men! Yet she did not BAN them...but Chris Brown, now 20...BANNED!! Just recently gospel singer BeBe Winans appeared on Oprah, and he has a pending domestic charge against him, filed by his ex-wife. Yet...he was allowed to be a guest on her show. Finally..others voiced their opinions on what looked like hypocrisy! If you ban Chris Brown from the show due to the domesic violence....Why was BeBe allowed on the show? Why have other entertainers appeared on the show with domestic violence on their records???? BeBe supposedly was not allowed on the show for a recent segment due to the public backlash. I do not condone any violence whatsoever from anyone, however fair is fair. Does Chris Brown not deserve a 2nd chance with the public and his fans? Shouldn't he be able to speak on a platform that spoke out about him when he wasn't there????
